Greensboro is fortunate to have an extensive network of parks, trails, lakes and recreation facilities that provide wonderful spaces for our community to gather, play and connect with nature. However, maintaining and improving these valuable public assets requires significant resources. One way residents can directly contribute to Greensboro’s parks while commemorating a loved one is through the Greensboro Parks Foundation’s Tribute Bench Program.
The Tribute Bench Program allows individuals to sponsor a durable 6-foot recycled plastic bench with a customized plaque inscribed with a personalized message of honor or remembrance. The bench donation covers the full cost of the bench, installation on an ADA-accessible concrete pad, maintenance, and a standard 8×2 inch cast bronze plaque with up to 3 lines of 18 characters each. Larger plaques are available for an additional fee.
Sponsored benches can be installed at a park, trail, or lake facility chosen by the donor and approved by Greensboro Parks and Recreation based on suitability and need. The benches remain in place for 10 years, after which donors can choose to re-adopt them or allow others to sponsor them. Greensboro Parks Foundation has final approval over plaque inscriptions to ensure they are appropriate for public spaces.
Proceeds from the Tribute Bench Program go directly to Greensboro Parks Foundation to support parks and recreation facilities, programs, and initiatives throughout the city. Some of the many ways these donations can help enhance Greensboro’s parks include:
- Maintaining trails, playgrounds, athletic fields/courts, and public spaces
- Funding community programs like outdoor fitness, environmental education, and summer camps
- Providing recreational access and opportunities for underserved populations
- Replacing aging equipment and renovating existing facilities
- Adding new amenities like splash pads, dog parks, disc golf courses and more
In addition to the tangible improvements funded through bench sponsorships, donating a tribute bench creates a lasting legacy honoring someone special. The personalized plaque ensures the story and memory behind the dedication will be shared with all who visit and enjoy the meaningful outdoor space.
Greensboro’s 108 parks, dozens of miles of trails, and numerous lakes and recreation centers play a vital role in our community’s quality of life, health, and environment. Sponsoring a tribute bench celebrates someone important while directly investing in these incredible public assets we’re so fortunate to have in Greensboro. What a wonderful way to create an enduring legacy!
