Keeley Park in Greensboro, North Carolina is about to become a haven for outdoor enthusiasts of all abilities with the grand opening of its new adaptive mountain biking course, thanks to the collaborative efforts of several generous organizations. This groundbreaking project was made possible through a combination of corporate philanthropy and community-focused partnerships.

The driving force behind the creation of this inclusive recreational space is VF Corporation, a global leader in branded lifestyle apparel and footwear. Through its charitable foundation, VF Corporation has committed substantial funding to enhance community well-being and promote accessibility. This support has been pivotal in realizing the vision of an adaptive mountain biking course at Keeley Park, setting a new standard for inclusive recreational facilities.

The Greensboro Parks Foundation played a crucial role in this initiative by partnering with VF Foundation. Their shared goal of expanding recreational opportunities for all residents has culminated in this state-of-the-art facility, designed to accommodate individuals with varying physical abilities. The partnership underscores the community’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and ensuring that everyone can enjoy the great outdoors.

In addition to the course itself, the Greensboro Parks Foundation has also acquired two specialized adaptive mountain bikes, thanks to grant funding from the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation. These bikes are more than just pieces of equipment; they represent a lifeline for individuals living with spinal cord injuries or other disabilities. Adaptive mountain bikes are engineered to offer stability, control, and safety, enabling users to navigate challenging terrains and enjoy the thrill of mountain biking without limitations.

The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for individuals with spinal cord injuries, has been instrumental in supporting projects that enhance accessibility and mobility. Their mission encompasses a broad range of initiatives, including funding innovative research, providing resources for spinal cord injury awareness, and supporting programs that enhance independence for individuals with disabilities.

The adaptive mountain bikes funded by the Reeve Foundation will allow users to experience the unique joys of mountain biking, from navigating rugged trails to enjoying the camaraderie of the biking community. These bikes are equipped with advanced features such as enhanced suspension systems, rugged tires, and adjustable components, all designed to accommodate various physical needs and preferences.

The opening of the adaptive mountain biking course at Keeley Park, one of just two such trails in North Carolina, is more than just a new recreational option; it represents a significant step toward a more inclusive and equitable community. By providing adaptive equipment and creating accessible recreational spaces, Greensboro is setting an example of how communities can come together to support and uplift individuals of all abilities. A ribbon cutting ceremony is planned for this fall, with an invitation to the public to be publicized in the coming weeks.
