A Summer of Growth, Joy, and Friendship — Greensboro Parks and Rec Camps Shine Bright

September 25, 2025

Summer 2025 brought laughter, learning, and growth to Greensboro as children from across our community joined Parks and Recreation summer camps. With fun, educational activities and opportunities for connection, our camp season was a resounding success — thanks in no small part to community support, scholarship funding through our Send a Kid to Camp program, a generous grant from Cone Health Foundation, and the generosity of our sponsors.

Celebrating Our Sponsors

We are deeply grateful to the sponsors who made the Send a Kid to Camp scholarships possible this year:

Their commitment, along with the Cone Health Foundation’s investment, opened the door to camp for children who otherwise would not have had the opportunity — a gift of joy, belonging, and discovery.

Camp in Review

Greensboro’s Recreation Center Summer Camp welcomed children ages 5–12 at nine recreation center sites across the city.

  • The staff-to-camper ratio remained strong (1:12), enabling counselors to provide individualized attention and build strong relationships with campers.
  • Camp weeks were packed with a variety of activities: games, sports, wellness education, environmental exploration, creative arts, free play, and special field trips.
  • Free lunch was provided daily, reducing barriers to participation and ensuring all campers had the nutrition needed to stay active.
  • Many families took advantage of Parks and Recreation Department fee assistance, enabling broader access to camp — a key part of our mission.

Impact Through Scholarship

Over the summer, our Send a Kid to Camp program awarded scholarships to 78 campers from 53 families. Because of that support:

  • Many children who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford camp joined in — making new friends, gaining confidence, and exploring new interests.
  • Scholarship recipients participated in the same enriching programming as their peers, from swimming and field trips to creative arts and science experiments.
  • Parents frequently reported that the structure of camp gave them peace of mind — knowing their children were engaged, safe, and supported during the summer months.

Voices from Camp

“I built something in woodworking and I got to present it to my family — I never thought I could do that!”

“My counselor helped me with a project, and now I want to be a counselor someday too.”

“This camp made me feel like I belong and like I can try new things.”

These comments reflect the transformation many campers experienced — confidence, curiosity, and joy.

Looking Ahead

As registration for Summer 2026 approaches, we’re already planning enhancements: more specialty weeks, deeper community partnerships, expanded scholarship capacity, and new experiential learning opportunities. Our goal remains to make Greensboro Park and Recreation camps accessible, affirming, and life-changing for as many children as possible.

We extend heartfelt gratitude to all staff, volunteers, families, donors, Cone Health Foundation, and our sponsors who made this summer possible. To help us expand access even further, we invite you to join us as a donor or sponsor for the Send a Kid to Camp program — because every child deserves the chance to experience the magic of camp.
