Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department summer day camps provide offer unique opportunities for children to try new things, build confidence, and grow friendships in engaging and affirming environments.
From community-based recreation center day camps that offer extended hours for working parents to specialty camps that challenge children of all abilities to test their limits, there is a camp for every child.
Recreation Center Day Camp
With 10 locations citywide, Community Recreation Center Day Camp is the City’s most popular camp. Each week is filled with innovative and exciting activities including games, sports, wellness education, outside time, environmental education, creative play, and interest-based skill building. Free lunch is served daily.
This day camp is among the most affordable in Greensboro and the department also offers fee assistance to families in financial need. Even though that opportunity is offered, in a city where one-in-four children live in poverty, this camp is still out of reach for many families.
Camp Joy
As part of its goal to provide enriching opportunities for people of all abilities, Parks and Recreation offers Camp Joy, a day camp for people five and older with disabilities.
Camp Joy is located at Hagan Stone Park. It offers a traditional summer camp experience in a fully-inclusive environment, with regular trips to the pool, arts and crafts, and a camp-wide talent show.
Xtreme Teen
The Greensboro City Lakes staff offers the city’s only outdoor adventure week, a small camp designed to meet the specific needs of young teens, 12-15. It provides a safe environment for teens to test their boundaries with sailing, kayaking, hiking, climbing, and other outdoor recreation opportunities.
The camp based at Lake Higgins, with trips to natural areas throughout the Triad to explore state parks and trails and unique educational opportunities, such as a behind-the-scenes visit to the Greensboro Science Center. Travel and admission fees make the cost of the camp $250 for a week – beyond the means of many children who would benefit from this exciting outdoor experience.
